Marcia Gay Harden was born in San Diego, California on 14 August 1959 to Beverly who was a housewife, and Thad an officer of the US Navy. She is the mother to a brother, and three sisters. The family moved frequently due to her father's job as diplomat, meaning that they were living all over the world in countries like Germany, Japan, and Greece. Harden was a student at Surrattsville High School in Clinton after settling down in Maryland. In 1980, the student attended the University of Texas at Austin and received a bachelor's degree in theater. Harden was accepted to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, in 1988, so that she could earn her MFA.
